3d Programs

I was wonder what eveyone thinks is the best 3d program.

Right now im using Maxon Cinema 4d (its a great one for me), Ive tried GMax and I dont like it...

Is 3ds Max alot better then GMax?

Post Tue May 17, 2005 7:35 am

I have both and I can't stand GMax for some reason. Maybe it's as simple as the shortcuts keys aren't the same, but I've gotten used to 3dsmax and I like it.

Other progs I use to mod:

3DSmax 7
Wings3D
Milkshape
HardCMP (Thanks Argh for pointing these out)
FLModelTool (Thanks Argh for pointing these out)
PhotoshopCS
UTF-Edit
I think that's it.

You know.... it gets me....

There is NO program that is better than the other.. they all do the same basic stuff... people bag milkshape... wtf do you expect for $25 US .. gold? Try currently importing a ship to freelancer without it....

I use both Max 5 and milkshape, now maybe.. I'm just used to milkshape., I find max 5 cumbersome and everytime I use it I have to remember the differences in shortcuts and methods for doing things, where I find the milkshape interface pretty staightforward and simple .. now maybe I'm just simple, but I'll put my abilities and Milkshape up against anyone here on TLR.. using ANY 3d program. Though there would naturally need to be a limit on polys as we have to keep the playing field fair

Maybe then poor workmen will stop blaming their tools...

There is the challenge.. who will rise to meet it?

Harrier

EDIT: @ Aluminium Haste
P.S. origins....lets thank the right people huh?
Hardcmp... We can thank Louva Deus and Shsan : HardCMP v1.0.0.18 by Louva-Deus & Shsan
FLModel tool....... For that we can thank Anton (and a host of others)

Um, I wasn't involved in the above crediting, lol... I just directed Aluminum to the above proggies... I certainly didn't write them

Anyhow... I dunno why anybody would get defensive about Milkshape. It does what it does pretty darn well. It's not a supurb modeler, but that's not what it's really made for. It's an import/export program with lots of tools to help modelers go from Point A (a more powerful modeler) to Point B (working game data).

For $25, it's the best deal in modeling, period. It doesn't need to defend itself- its record with helping modders realize their dreams is very long, and we should all just keep hoping that none of the big companies ever offer the programmer enough money to quit making new versions

Well first of all,

Milkshape, for th epricce of it it is a pretty decent program, and has a great compatibility for many game formats. I purchased this one myself.

However,

The program i do all my modeling in is Lightwave 8, especially for Freelancer ships it is so much easier to create, texture, and Hardpoint your ships in LW than i Milkshape, i only use milkshape for the final scaling and the exporting to CMP/MAT files.

----

I agree with teh above comment that there is not one 3d program imho that is better than the next, each one has it's quirks, even my fav Lightwave.

@Harrier: Sorry for the mix up, I was just thanking Argh for pointing these proggies out. I know he didn't write them. Please don't get mad, it's just that I've used; Maya4,5,6, Max4,5,6,7, Wings3D, Brice3D and several others, and I just have my opinions about milkshape. But, and I'm just pointing this out, the program Wings3D is a high-poly modeler much like MilkShape, with a better interface (for me). But the best part is, it's free!!!
Now, it doesn't have ALL those export and import formats like MilkShape has, but people just need to create them, as it's not a lack of ability on the programs part.
I have yet to try and CREATE something from scratch with Wings, but I might give it a try just to see how easy it is.

@harrier:
BTW what work/mods have you done??? Just wondering.

AluminumHaste...If you are unaware...Harrier and I started the Epsilon Mod many moons ago and with the help of new team members, it has become quite a large mod...Harrier is known around the community as one of the modelling "gurus" and has helped countless modellers get started and develop their skills. It doesn't take much looking to find something that can be at least partially credited to Harrier's expertise in modelling. Though he wont admit it, he is one of the best modellers for Freelancer...I'll put my name to that claim.

I'll second that nomination .

I just saw that a few hours ago when googling his name with freelancer. To do what he does and do it with milkshape is impressive indeed. My hats off to you guys for all your wonderful contributions.

BTW did I accidentally pick a bone with Harrier?? Is he going to do everything in his power to destroy me??

Many thanks for the kind words.. ,

@ AluminumHaste,.... no not at all...*hides large spikey club*.. I would rather see you prosper here and learn new skills, to encourage not discourage.. lol

Harrier.
